Why women are rising to top management positions precisely during a crisis | Der Standard

A company crisis? Suddenly, diversity becomes a silver bullet – but only temporarily. This is the glass cliff.

Women often reach top management positions, when the situation is critical. Studies show that companies appoint women especially when their performance is poor. Are they beacons of hope? Or lightning rods?

The problem:
✅ High expectations
❌ Limited resources
⚠️ Invisible Risks

My advice: Don't say yes right away!
Analyze the situation and your chances of success objectively, ask for support, and examine the culture. Anything you demand right at the beginning will be seen as a sign of leadership strength – later it will appear as a weakness.

And after the crisis? Often another man comes along. Why? Because diversity is not structurally embedded. This needs to change. 👉 FemaleLeadership must not be a crisis experiment.
Women don't belong on the "Glass Cliff," but in Positions with real power and sustainable support.
